Developing reading skills
Our first class novel is Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne. Through this gentle story we will be ensuring the children's understanding of new vocabulary and identifying with the feelings of each character.
We will teach reading every day through choral reading for fluency, checking the understanding of vocabulary and helping the children to understand and enjoy what they read.
The children will have a reading book that they bring home every night. Please could you ensure that they bring it in every day as they will read it every day in class.
Developing writing skills.
During the first half of the Autumn term we will be helping the children to understand how important it is to understand sentence and grammar structures to write a variety of coherant sentences.
The children will be looking closely at key punctuation and ensuring they can write independent, coherent statements, questions, exclamations and commands.
They will also learn how to extend sentences using conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs.
As a part of the writing process, they will review their work and make changes and revisions.
Spelling
Spelling will be a key aspect of developing writing skills and will be taught daily. Twelve spellings, linked to phonics sounds, will be learnt each week and will be found in the homework section of our page, where you will find other words that children need to learn to spell whilst in Year 3.
Spelling tests will take place on Friday and include the 12 words learnt that week plus 8 words from previous weeks work.
Handwriting.
Handwriting will be taught every day. The children will be expected to use joined handwriting in their independent work by the end of Year 3. It is a key component in developing children's writing.
Children will build on these fundamental building blocks to write longer pieces of work as we move into the end of the Autumn term.
Developing number skills.
During the Autumn term the children will be learning to order, read and manipulate numbers up to 4 digits. They will be developing and securing their addition and subtraction calculations and increase their recall of known facts, eg. number bonds to 20, number bonds to 100.
Multiplication is an important aspect and the children will need to remember their knowledge from Year 2 (2X 5X and 10x) and moving onto 3X 4X and 8X. By the end of Year 3 they will need to be able to recall all of their multiplication facts in readiness for the Statutory Multiplication Test at the end of Year 4. They will be working on multiplication daily and recieving multiplication homework every week.
Please use this link to access handwriting resources to support you child at home.

Games to enhance learning
Look at our super smart Legendary Line!
What makes me a Me?
Fabulous Artwork!
3P have been looking closely at trees and leaves.
They used their sketching skills and remembered their colour mixing from year 2 to create these lovely pictures.
Well Done everyone!
In Science the children have been learning all about the skeletal system.
They worked in groups and drew around each other. They worked together to add bones to the body and label them with the bones name.
We found a funny way to remember the Patella - by rhyming it with nutella! :)
We are studying Stone Age to Iron Age in History.
This week we looked at Stonehenge and found out how the ancient monument might have been built.
Look at out gorgeous henge pictures. They are wonderfull!
.
The children showed grest respect and superb manners whilst tasting Prashad.
Prashad is a sweet blessing from the Sikh faith.
The children had great fun learning about the digestive system. We used a knife to represent the teeth and cut up an apple. We added water to simulate saliva and used a food processor to break down the food as the stomac would do. Finally we added the pulp to the leg of a pair of tights to simulate the pulp travelling through the intestines. The 'intestines' took out the water and nutrients and left the rest as waste.
We have been studying line in our Art lessons. We looked at Katsushike Hakusai's work with block printing. The children made their our polystyrene printing tile and used used rollers and printing inks to print these images.
What a fantstic set of keyrings the children made!
They developed their design and sewing skills to create a keyring for that special someone.
They even did their own photography!
Wow! What a busy day.
Good listening and concentrating were needed for this making job today.
The children made their own 'pop-up' card with two steps on different levels.
Some very careful, independent work!
Beautiful trees!
Paper folding skills, perseverence and concentration needed for this lovely craft.
We used clay this afternoon to make the 'Great Sphinx'.
We used our rolling and shaping skills and learnt to join with scoring and slip.
Today we looked at the bust of Queen Nefertiti. We looked at her beautiful collar and then recreated our own necklaces using paper plates and pasta.
Fun Fact: Nefertiti means “A Beautiful Woman Has Come.”
We are botanists.
We enjoyed looking at flowers closely, with magnifying glasses and then we drew what we saw.
Lovely bunnies for our lovely mummies.
Happy Easter Everyone.
Look at what we created to celebrate!
Today we became Geologists. We examined 7 different types of rock. We could even examine some minerals.
Sandstone, limestone, pumice, chalk, marble, slate, and granite
We used words like sparkly, powdery, smooth, hard, crumbly, glittery, permeable, sandy, heavy.
As part of our work on architecture the children designed and made a clay tile. We based our designs on themes from nature.
What a creative bunch of children they are!
