Children protection, safeguarding & Prevent

At Belle Vue Primary School & Nursery the health, safety and well-being of every child is our priority. We expect all staff, governors and volunteers to share this commitment to safeguarding our pupils.

We listen to our pupils and take seriously what they tell us. All school staff are trained in Child Protection, and children are made aware of the adults they can talk to if they have any concerns. Staff are trained to look out for signs of physical/emotional harm or neglect and are required to report these to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

The procedures which we follow have been laid down by the Dudley Safeguarding Team and the school has adopted a Child Protection Policy in line with this, for the safety of all. On rare occasions our concern about a child may mean that we have to consult other agencies. We will ensure that all concerns are discussed with parent/carers first, before any referrals are made, unless we believe that such a move may be contrary to a child's welfare.

We actively support the Government's Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.

Statement of procedures for dealing with allegations of abuse against staff

All organisations providing services to children and young people must ensure that their staff and volunteers are safe to do so.

The vast majority of adults who work with children/young people act professionally and aim to provide a safe and supportive environment for the children and young people in their care. But it must be recognised that there are adults who will deliberately seek out, create or exploit opportunities to abuse children. It is therefore essential that a clear process exists for the investigation and resolution of allegations made against staff and volunteers.

The allegations' process is managed by Dudley’s LADO (Local Area Designated Officer). The LADO is responsible for:

  • Managing individual cases
  • Providing advice and guidance
  • Liaising with police and other agencies
  • Monitoring progress of cases for timeliness, thoroughness and fairness

All statutory partner agencies (Headteachers, Chair of Governors, DSLs etc) are required to report all allegations to the LADO within one working day. All referrals should be sent to allegations@dudley.gov.uk .

In Dudley, Yvonne Nelson-Brown and Valerie Wilmot are responsible for managing allegations, they report to Dudley Safeguarding People Partnership.
For advice and information about allegations against staff and volunteers please contact safeguarding.

Prevent

"Extremism is vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.  We also include in our definition of extremism calls for death of members of our armed forces, whether in this country or overseas" (HM Government Prevent Strategy)

PREVENT in the context of Counter-terrorism is intervention before any criminal offence has been committed with the aim of preventing individuals or groups from committing crimes.

Keeping children safe from these risks is a safeguarding matter and is approached in the same way as safeguarding children from other risks.  Children should be protected from messages of all violent extremism including, but not restricted to, those link to extreme Islamist ideology, or to Far Right/Neo Nazi/White Supremacist ideology, Irish Nationalist and Loyalist paramilitary groups, and extremist Animal Rights movements.

Operation encompass

Belle Vue Primary & Nursery school are part of the Operation Encompass project which runs alongside The West Midlands Police.

Operation Encompass reports to schools, prior to the start of the next school day, when a child or young person has been exposed to, or involved in, any domestic incident.

A key adult, liaises with the police and to use the information that has been shared, in confidence, while ensuring that the school is able to make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families, who have been involved in, or exposed to, a domestic incident.

Dudley's early help offer

Providing early help is more effective in promoting the welfare of children than reacting later.

Early help means providing support as soon as a problem emerges, at any point in a child’s life. Early help can also prevent further problems arising.

Effective early help relies upon local organisations and agencies working together to identify children and families who would benefit from early help and to undertake an assessment of the need for early help.

For more information on Early Help please view the Dudley Early Help page, or speak to a DSL
